Working on Top of Experimental Enclosures

System: Experimental Enclosures
Period: User Beam
Event: Work Performed on Top of Experimental Enclosures

Shielding in the roofs of the experimental stations at the APS was specified with the expectation of low occupancy and an associated reduced shielding and higher accepted dose rates. Therefore consistent with the principle of ALARA, the roofs of the stations should not typically be occupied while there is beam in the stations. If it is not reasonable to close the shutter during an access to the station roof, cognizant/knowledgable beamline staff may access the roof for short periods (45 min/24 hr period). Others (contractors, FMS personnel, non-resident users, etc.) may not access the roof while there is beam in the station.

Labyrinths are of special concern and no person should ever put their hands into a labyrinth while there is beam in the stations.
