Required Training for Users

All APS users, including APS staff, resident users, general users, etc., must complete the required "core" courses listed below before participating in an experiment, either hands-on or remotely. Additional training requirements may be identified in the experiment safety assessment.

  • A user (or employee) badge number is required to take training
  • APS user core courses can be taken remotely, through the My APS Portal, or in the User Office.
  • CNM user courses and additional safety courses are available on the remote training system; some can be taken only from within the Argonne network.
  • APS users can check whether your training is up to date in My APS Portal.
  • Additional courses available remotely include: ESH 196A (Hazard Communication Update), ESH 442 (DOT Awareness and Inner Container Preparation Training), ESH 590 (Engineered Nanomaterials Orientation, one time course), and ESH 705 (Analytical X-ray Safety).

* Current GERT training from another DOE facility will be accepted for this requirement. Present evidence (current GERT card or training record from home institution) to the APS User Office for credit.  Similar credit CANNOT be issued for Rad Worker training.  If a user is RAD Worker qualified at their home laboratory, they CANNOT be given credit for GERT training at another DOE laboratory.

** Must be completed for each beamline where a user will work. This training is provided by beamline staff and can be arranged through sector personnel.

Questions or concerns about training requirements can be sent to the User Safety, Nena Moonier (nmoonier@aps.anl.gov). See the APS Policy and Procedure on User Training for full details.
