Sector 8-ID

Welcome to sector 8-ID of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) located at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Sector 8-ID is operated by the Dynamics and Structure Group, which is part of the APS X-Ray Science Division (XSD). Sector 8-ID has 2 experiment enclosures---8-ID-E and 8-ID-I---which have suspended operations in preparation for the APS-Upgrade. When the APS-U comes online (anticipated in mid-2024), the main research programs pursued at this sector will resume at two new feature beamlines at 8-ID (XPCS) and 9-ID (CSSI/GIXS/GI-XPCS).

Hybrid First Experiments Workshop for X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) Beamline 8ID at the APS will take place July 18-19, 2023 at the APS. Registration accepted through Jun 27, 2023.

Hybrid First Experiments Workshop for Coherent Surface Scattering Imaging (CSSI) Beamline 9ID at the APS -- including Grazing Incidence X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (GI-XPCS) -- will take place August 1-2, 2023 at the APS. Registration accepted through July 17, 2023.

Recordings of two Townhall Meetings describing the plans for the new beamlines are available but require registration. Registration is still being accepted to view the recordings:

APS beamline 8-ID-I is dedicated to the study of equilibrium fluctuations and fluctuations about the evolution to equilibrium condensed matter in the small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) geometry via x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) or x-ray intensity fluctuation spectroscopy (XIFS). APS beamline 8-ID-E is dedicated to the study of ordering and kinetics at surfaces and interfaces via the technique of grazing incidence x-ray-scattering (GIXS) in both small-angle (GISAXS) and wide-angle (GIWAXS) regimes. APS beamline 8-ID-E also hosts programs to measure equilibrium dynamics via XPCS at large wave vector transfers and at liquid surfaces.
