Abstract:
 
The high-resolution powder diffraction beamline at the ESRF (ID22), built with a dual-undulator source on the 6 GeV storage ring, combines a wide continuous range of incident energy (6-75 keV) with high brightness, offering the possibility to carry out high-flux, high-resolution powder diffraction measurements. The high angular resolution is ensured by the presence of analyzer crystals (perfect Si 111 crystals) intercepting the diffracted beam. A large medical imaging detector (Perkin-Elmer) allows complementary measurements as needed, for example for texture characterization or fast pair-distribution-function (PDF) analysis. ID22 can be exploited for a wide range of powder diffraction measurements, with various applications in materials science. In situ and operando studies versus temperature or gas absorption are routinely performed through a dedicated and flexible sample environment system. A new approach to collecting high angular resolution powder diffraction data will be implemented in the next few months, with the replacement of the current scintillator detectors by a hybrid photon-counting pixel detector positioned behind the analyzer crystals. This will offer major advantages in terms of data handling and processing, also enhanced by the new ESRF source (EBS). After a brief description of the ID22 beamline, I will show a few recent examples. In the last part, I will present the new high-resolution operation mode that is being implemented, in which analyzer crystals and 2D photon-counting detector are combined.
