The 2017 National School on Neutron & X-ray Scattering will be held on August 5-August 19, 2017, at the Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source (APS), and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor, with the first week at the APS where lectures are to be held in Bldg. 401/Rm. A1100 and students will conduct tutorial experiments at approximately seven beamlines.
The main purpose of the National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering is to educate graduate students in the use of major neutron and x-ray facilities. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry and national laboratories, include basic tutorials on the principles of scattering theory and the characteristics of the sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. Students conduct short experiments at the Advanced Photon Source, and at the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor. These experiments provide hands-on experience for using synchrotron and neutron sources.
The school is jointly conducted by Argonne National Laboratory's Communications, Education, and Public Affairs Division; the Advanced Photon Source and Materials Science Division; and Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Biology and Soft Matter Division; Chemical and Engineering Materials Division; and Condensed Matter Division. The school is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science-Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division. This funding covers instruction, travel and lodging costs for the 60 students who are selected to attend.
Graduate students of any nationality who are studying at North American universities are eligible to apply to attend the 2018 NX School and should look for more information at https://www.aps.anl.gov/Conferences-and-Workshops/2017/national-school-…. Applications are usually accepted starting in January with a spring deadline (TBD).
