Abstract:

With their brightness, energy and rate, new generation light sources, storage rings and FEL require novel detectors with unprecedented performance. Along with the birth of LCLS and now with the LCLS-II upgrade, SLAC has been developing new families of integrating PAD detectors required to exploit the new capabilities of SLAC sources and to enable new science. Along with the general-purpose ePix family with aiming at full frame readouts at 100 kHz, a new family, SparkPix, capable of extracting information at the full MHz repletion rate available at LCLS-II is under development. SparkPix detectors are tweaked for specific classes of experiments where characteristic features in the data can be exploited to minimize data rates out of the detectors. The first member of the SparkPix family is Tixel a Time-of-flight detector with high segmentation capable to detect directly electrons and ions with a time resolution down to 100 ps. Tixel is optimized for COLd Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) experiments at MHz rate planned at LCLS-II. Segmentation in pixels of 100umx100um will allow the possibility to resolve momenta of large number of concurrent fragments. After a brief introduction on SLAC detector developments, the presenters will describe planned experiments at LCLS and the characteristics of the Tixel detector. Status and timeline of the R&D project will be presented tighter with the results of a first small prototype of the tPix ASIC designed to demonstrate critical performance metrics and validate the concept.
