MESSAGE FROM MURRAY

MESSAGE FROM MURRAY
Warm wishes for a good holiday season from your friends at APS! Things are exciting here as we get more deeply into planning for our proposed Upgrade (formerly called the APS Renewal). Check out our website for the latest information. Our scientific advisory committee (SAC) has new members--check out the list here. During our January SAC meeting, we will have a crosscut review of protein crystallography and a special executive session with directors of biology CATs on strategic planning for the future of biological research at APS and how the upgrade could support that. We are delighted that the run 2009-03 has just ended with the highest record reliability ever at APS – 139.61 hours (almost 6 days) mean time between faults. Please join me in thanking the dedicated APS accelerator and engineering staff who work so hard to maintain the machine.

USER MATTERS

1. Call for Workshop Proposals for 2010 Users Meeting: Due January 13, 2010

We are soliciting proposals for workshop topics for the 2010 APS Users Meeting. To help us select and organize the workshops, we're asking potential organizers to submit proposals by Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Proposals should be one page long and include the following:

-- a description of the workshop's scientific or technical focus,
-- a list of suggested speakers (it need not be a final list), and
-- the names of at least two workshop organizers.

Limited funding will be available to help cover costs associated with workshop organization, but identification of other support would be useful. The workshop schedule will be announced after the APSUO Steering Committee meeting on January 14, 2010. Please send workshop proposals to UM_workshops@aps.anl.gov.

2. APS Users Organization Rosalind Franklin Young Investigator Award Nominations Now Accepted

Do you know a promising young scientist who should be recognized? If so, consider submitting a nomination for the 2010 APS Users Organization Rosalind Franklin Young Investigator Award. This award will be presented during the 2010 APS Users Meeting, which is being held on May 3-5, 2010. The deadline for receipt of complete nominations is February 22, 2010. The award winner will be notified no later than March 26, 2010.

This award, which is presented every two years, was established in 2004 to recognize an important scientific or technical achievement by a young investigator (within two years of his or her Ph.D. degree) accomplished at or strongly beneficial to the APS. The award consists of a plaque and $1000. The award recipient will also be asked to present a 20-minute lecture on his or her research at the APS Users Meeting. The award was named for Rosalind Franklin, who in the 1950s when she was in her early thirties, performed the x-ray crystallographic studies of DNA that were a critical contribution to the solution of the molecule's structure. More information about this award and the three previous winners (Alexis Templeton, Wendy Mao, and Oleg G. Shpyrko) can be found at http://www.aps.anl.gov/About/Committees/APS_Users_Organization/Franklin/index.htm.
Nominations for this award should be made on-line by the nominator, who will be responsible for collecting information from the nominee as well as supporting letters. For further information, click here.
