Beamline 4-ID-D

Beamline 4-ID-D is operated by the Magnetic Materials Group in the X-ray Science Division (XSD) of the Advanced Photon Source.

It's primary research focus is on magnetic spectroscopy measurements at energies between 2.5 and 30 keV. 

  • X-ray magnetic circular dichroism.
  • Magnetic x-ray scattering.
  • X-ray magnetic reflectivity studies.

Recent Research Highlights

Exposing Valence-Bond Model Inadequacies

August 2, 2012

The bond-valence model has for years been used to relate the number of nearest atomic neighbors and the interatomic distances to the valence state of an atom. Researchers using beamlines 4-ID-D and 3-ID-D have recently demonstrated that obtianing valence information in this way does not necessarily yield the correct state.
